Money Matters

School students need to have awareness on how to plan for their financial future. One interesting way to mould the money matters attitude is to engage them in a financial simulation game.

“It’s imperative to cultivate a good sense of money management and investment from young as the Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency has revealed that 16% of its debt management programme customers were below 30 years old, and that 44% were 30-40 years old.

“The fact that youths are getting into debt so early in their lives should be a cause for concern,” said Neoh Ai Hoon, DISTED College marketing officer.

To encourage students to value wealth creation, her college conducted the CashFlow financial board game at some secondary schools in Penang including SMJK Union.

L'Oreal Brandstorm 2011, KDU Team 'TROIS' is First Runner

PETALING JAYA, 13 June 2011 – When the idea of participating in the 2011 L’Oreal Brandstorm was first brought up by their PR lecturer, Doris Lim, KDU students, Elaine Jalleh, Ethan Wong & Josh Chuah, thought, “Why not?”

Brandstorm, an annual international competition by L’Oreal, gives students the unique opportunity to experience being a brand manager and the realities of working in a global marketing environment, especially in a company such as L’Oreal.

Taking on the team name, Trois, which means three in French, the three final year KDU-Murdoch University set out to conceptualize their product range and its creative brief based on the challenge that L’Oreal had set this year - “Be creative and attract men to salons: imagine a new service experience and its associated range of products for L'Oréal Professionnel Homme.”

Malaysia's Bankruptcy or Imprisonment Policy A Warning To America

Malaysia’s recent proposal that student loan debtors either be forced into bankruptcy or put into prison for failure to pay their debts could serve as warning to America. While the U.S. does not have a policy of imprisoning debtors for failure to pay student loans, we also do not have a policy for easily freeing students of their student loan debt in bankruptcy, something most consider unfair and unjust.

Currently, it is nearly impossible for debtors to discharge student loan debts in bankruptcy even if they are facing a major disability and chronic underemployment. But ironically, a few years back a convicted felon was allowed to discharge his student loans because the bankruptcy judge ruled that it was unlikely, due to his criminal history, that he would ever earn enough to repay the student loan debt.  Is this what it has come to?  Only those ensnared in the criminal justice system have a fighting chance of discharging their student loan debt? We certainly hope not. But if one was to take only a cursory glance at how student loan discharges are handled during bankruptcy, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to conclude that student loan debts  have become their own type of imprisonment.

The distribution and selection of scholarships among top scorers in the SPM examination were made transparently in accordance with the Cabinet’s decision on Jan 14, 2009, he told the Dewan Rakyat here yesterday.
