English-Medium Government Schools Unlikely To Be Set Up - Muhyiddin

SERDANG, Sept 30 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said English-medium government schools were unlikely to be set up in the country, unless there was an amendment to the Education Act and the National Education Policy.

He said that as the education minister, it was his duty to implement the Education Act and the National Education Policy.

"It is clear in the national education policy that the Malay Language is the medium of instruction. It is a different story in a private school," he told reporters.

Education stocks decline as optimism wanes

KUALA LUMPUR: Education-related stocks on Bursa Malaysia declined in the morning session on Thursday, Sept 29 as the outlook for the sector turned weaker.

At 12.30pm, HELP fell 25 sen to RM1.62, SEG International down two sen to RM1.70 and Masterskill shed one sen to RM1.08.

HELP yesterday when announcing its third quarter results said it was impacted by lower enrolment and higher cost, and also indicated that its students from China were likely to pursue their studies directly in the US and UK due to the weakening dollar and sterling pound.

RHB Research meanwhile downgraded the education sector from Overweight to Neutral, and said that it was cautious on the sector this quarter given rising macroeconomics headwinds, illiquid factor of the stocks and the small market capitalisation of the education stocks (less than RM1 billion).

In addition, high foreign shareholdings for HELP (12.5%) and Masterskill (49%) also increased their susceptibility to volatile portfolio flows, it said on Sept 29.

RHB Research cut its target FY12 PER by one to two times given the bearish macroeconomic outlook and few re-rating catalysts for the sector.

The research house downgraded HELP and Masterskill from Outperform to Underperform, while maintaining SEG an Outperform. - TheEdgeMalaysia.com

UPKO resolutions include education autonomy

UPKO resolutions include education autonomy
By Nancy Lai -The Borneo Post

PENAMPANG: The United Pasokmomogun KadazanDusun Murut Organization’s (Upko) 13th triennial delegates congress yesterday passed six resolutions for the party’s leadership to follow up on.

Among the resolutions are the need for Sabah and Sarawak to be given autonomy in managing and addressing their respective education issues as well as the setting up of a KDM higher learning institute.

Upko Women urged the Federal Government to give full power to the education directors in the two states, to allow them to decide on the education issues in their respective states, including the recruitment of new teachers.

The movement also wants a special panel from Sabah and Sarawak to be appointed in the Teacher Education Division, and priority to be given to local natives in the recruitment of trainee teachers in overcoming the problem of getting teachers to serve in rural areas in east Malaysia.

They said that while the 40:30:30 quota for the recruitment of teachers from Semenanjung, Sabah and Sarawak was acceptable, there were no guarantees that this quota was being observed, as the recruitment panel was made up only of education officers from Semenanjung, with no representation from Sabah and Sarawak.

The movement also urged the BN Government to expedite effort to get

43 ecstatic students and their proud parents gathered on Tuesday, 9th August 2011 to receive their scholarship awards at The Sun/MAPCU Scholarship Awards 2011 ceremony. YB Dato’ Dr Hou KokChung, the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, was the guest of honour who presented the awards to each and every deserving scholarship recipient. The luncheon at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian &Country Resort was attended by 300 scholarship recipients, parents and senior representatives from the donor institutions who are MAPCU members.

This year, 1557 applicants vied for the 45 scholarships pledged by participating education institutions. The high number of applications received indicates that while tertiary education is still very much in pursuance, many still see its cost as an obstacle. After stringent short listing and interviewing, The Sun and MAPCU have decided on the 43 most deserving students to receive the scholarships this year. The students were selected based on a combination of factors, namely academic achievements, participation in co-curricular activities and economic status.

Sixteen MAPCU colleges and universities dished out RM4.5 million worth of scholarships as part of their corporate social responsibility. KDU University College, which was just awarded the status of university college, was among the biggest contributors for the program by sponsoring RM216,000worth of courses for 8 students. In his opening speech, YB Dr Hou commended KDU for their generosity and role in educating the future leaders of the country.

In an effort to become a high income nation driven by innovation, the Government has allocated total of 2.6 billion ringgit for the MyBrain15 postgraduate scholarships program as part of the10th Malaysia Plan to be implemented from 2011-2015. Each student receives up to RM24,000 in tuition fees to pursue their higher education at either public or private universities and an additional RM5,000 as journal and thesis allowances.

Malaysian students looking to earn a graduate degree or a bachelor’s degree in the United States will have a new tool at their disposal September 17: the Hobsons Virtual Student Fair (VSF).

The VSF is free and open to students from across Malaysia who are interested in pursuing a bachelor’s degree or a graduate degree at a U.S. university. Much like a traditional student fair, the VSF features booths staffed by university representatives. But because the fair takes place online, it is much more accessible and convenient for students to attend; all they need is an Internet connection.

In the virtual fair environment, Malaysian students will be able to view photos and videos of the U.S. universities, download materials, and chat live with admissions officers, professors, and current students. The booths at the fair are segmented by level—undergraduate and graduate—so students can easily find the schools that offer the degrees they’re looking for.

Parents and counselors are also encouraged to attend the free event to learn about the U.S. universities.

The active hours of the VSF are 12:00hs–20:00hs September 17, and visitors should expect to spend 1.5–2.5 hours visiting the virtual booths and chatting with university staff members. As a bonus, the exhibit hall will remain open for repeat visits for 90 days; while university staff will not be available for chat during this extended time period, all of the videos, photos, and text documents will still be there to review and download. This will give students the flexibility to go back for another look at a school they liked, or even to visit for the first time if they weren’t able to make it to the live event.

Registration for the September 17 fair is now open, and students can sign up quickly at Hobson's Virtual Student Fair (VSF) The registration page also features a list of participating universities with links to each school’s website and key information.

Group farming project for graduates in Sabah

Kota Kinabalu: The state government is prepared to consider the proposal for a large-scale group farming project to accomodate agriculture graduates from Institut Skill-Tech Sabah especially to those who are without land.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said such project would provide opportunities to these graduates and the institut to collaborate in planning and implementing strategies to develop the plantation and agricultures sectors in the state.

"We will give serious consideration to any application that is beneficial to the people, including the youth, in the state" he said after opening the first convocation of Institut of Skill-Tech Sabah, at Tun Ahmad Raffae Auditorium, Tun Mustapha Tower here.

Musa was asked to comment on the proposal for such project by the institut's chief executive, Nordin Abdul Maleh, in his welcoming speech earlier.

The CM said the setting up of agro-related institutes in the state was appropriate in view of the need to give training opportunities to the youth, thus enabling them to work in the plantation sector.

This was also in line with the Governmen's intention to focus on the agriculture sector apart from tourism and maunfacturing, he said.

"We will focus on the agricultural sector in view of the availability of vast tract of fertile land in Sabah' he said, thanking the Melaka-based institut for setting up a branch in Keningau, in the interior of Sabah.

Musa urged the youth, especially Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia school leavers to enroll in courses provided by the institut. "We should change the perception that livestock breeding or farming are lowly jobs.

If we have the knowledge and skills, we can be a successful livestock breeder or farmer" he said, adding that Sabah is on the right track in making agriculture one of the economic engines of the state.-Daily Express
