PSD scholars must work in Malaysia
If you a recipient of Malaysian Public Services Department (PSD) Scholarship, this is what you must always keep in mind.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced that PSD scholars must work locally beginning this year.
Those who are not employed by the public sector upon graduation must secure employment with an approved private sector company in Malaysia.
Previously, PSD scholars who did not get employed by the government were released from their bonds.
TalentCorp, which was established last year to attract skilled workers says that this new requirement ensures ‘a strong return on investment on the 12,000 students who will be sponsored this year’.

Awards for 50 top students
THEIR hard work has paid off as 50 of the country’s top scholars who scored A+’s in all subjects in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2011 qualified to join in the prestigious National Scholarship Programme.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who announced this, said the students would be sponsored from pre-university to undergraduate level in the fields of their choice in local and foreign universities recognised by the Government.
“The Government has increased the number of National Scholarship Programme recipients to 50 this year from 30 the previous year due to the improvement in last year’s SPM results.
“This will give more opportunities to top students to further their studies at some of the world’s most renowned universities,” he said in his speech before presenting the offer letters to the recipients on Thursday.

Malaysians regard local education system highly
Malaysians in general have high regard for our local education system, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today.
Muhyiddin made this statement in light of a recent survey by Introspek Asia, which revealed yesterday that 55 per cent of Malaysian adults believe that our education system is comparable to other countries, while 35 per cent said it is “better than that of developed countries”.
“This finding is interesting as it reflects a positive attitude among a majority of Malaysians toward our education system,” he said today in his keynote address at the Asian Strategy and Learning Institute’s (ASLI) 16th Malaysian Education Summit here.
“I believe our teachers and educators who have done so much to uplift the standard of our education deserve a pat on the back for their good work,” he added.
However, Muhyiddin added that the finding alone “must not lull us into complacency”.

Aye for ‘agripreneur’ project
Universiti Putra Malaysia’s (UPM) Agripreneur Incubator Programme has received rave reviews as it not only aims to produce more entrepreneurs in the sector but also change the landscape of food production and marketing in the country.
AFTER completing her tertiary studies, Siti Suliza Salamat, 28, had dreams of being an entrepreneur.
Using their savings of RM3,500 as starting capital, Siti Suliza and her friend decided to go into the business of planting rock melons in Serdang.
“But because we did not have enough entrepreneurship knowledge, we suffered financial losses and we were in debt; I couldn’t even pay rent for a few months,” said the Horticultural Science graduate.
“That experience made me realise that having agricultural know-how without entrepreneurship skills will not get me anywhere.

No need for extra holidays
AS A parent, I am upset over the many replacement classes which are held on Saturdays so that extra days off can be declared for a festival.
As it is, many schools have to conduct additional lessons on Saturday to make up for the extra days taken during the Chinese New Year break.
A circular was sent out some weeks ago that schools had to replace an extra day that will be taken on Oct 25, the day before Hari Raya Qurban (Hari Raya Haji), so that schoolchildren could have yet another extended weekend.
What irks me is why the needs to have so many holidays and then replace them with Saturday classes. In fact, it is an additional administrative cost to the school.
When classes are held on Saturdays, it disrupts a child’s other extra-curricular activities such as swimming, music and even tuition lessons. These classes have to be rescheduled and it becomes an inconvenience not only to the students but also to parents, transport providers and others.

IMPROVING LOCAL RESEARCH AND INNOVATION
THE Science Act and Science and Technology Human Capital Roadmap will be developed to improve local innovation.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said these plans would help to create a more conducive ecosystem for science and technology in Malaysia.
“In line with the Government’s aim to improve the growth of internationally recognised research and innovation centres, the National Institutes of Biotechnology Malaysia (NBIM) has also been set up.
“The NBIM is a cluster of research institutes that are centrally managed to ensure that research products are quick to respond to industry needs locally and globally,” he said in his speech before launching the National Year of Science and Innovation Movement 2012 recently.
Muhyiddin who is also the Education Minister, said that the Government had supported local research and development through various scholarship schemes such as the National Science Fellowship.

INTERNET CONNECTIONS IN ALL SCHOOLS BY 2013
THE 1Bestarinet School Internet connection network and virtual learning platform is already in place in 1,275 schools in the peninsular.
Deputy Education Minister Dr Mohd Puad Zakarshi said the project is on track, adding that by 2013 all schools in Malaysia should have the service.
Unlike the previous school Internet connection network, Schoolnet, which had problems providing connection to rural schools, 1Bestarinet would eventually reach even rural schools in Sabah and Sarawak, he said at the presentation of Eduspec Holdings Bhd Dynabook IT exam certificates at SJK(C) Yuk Chai last Sunday.
“There are grades for rural schools. At grade one and two, you can still make phone calls with your handphones if you are in that area,” he added.
Under the 1Bestarinet project, schools in rural areas that do not have network connections will have telecommunication towers built for them, he said.

HIGH END LEARNING
An education at an international or private school goes beyond the confines of the classroom, and provides the chance for students to learn and grow.
HIGH-tech classrooms wired with Internet access, multi-cuisine “restaurants” and Olympic-sized swimming pools on a school campus? No kidding!
The new international and private schools that have sprung up attracting urbane parents with an array of facilities that include dance studios, music rooms, digital libraries and sprawling manicured lawns. With a low teacher-student ratio in such schools, teachers are able to interact with their charges on a more personal level making sure that they excel academically and holistically.
These are just some of the perks of studying at private and international schools which are becoming the preferred choice that affluent parents desire for their children.

Curtin Sarawak award and scholarship, graduation and alumni events on 27 and 28 April 2012
Miri – 9 April 2012 – 27 and 28 April 2012 are set to be momentous dates for several hundred students, staff and alumni of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) as the university holds its annual Award and Scholarship Ceremony, graduation ceremonies for its graduating classes of 2011, and annual dinner for its alumni.
The Award and Scholarship Ceremony will be held in the evening of 27 April in the Sarawak Grand Ballroom of the Miri Marriott Resort & Spa.

Instead of a single graduation ceremony for all degree programmes, there will be separate ceremonies for business and engineering and science programmes. There will furthermore not be a separate ceremony for diploma programmes, which will be incorporated into the School of Business’ graduation ceremony. This will align Curtin Sarawak’s graduation ceremonies with Curtin University’s in Perth and enhance the synergy between the mother campus and its largest international campus.

(IMPORTANT) Requirement for Scholarship Applications
More and more students are becoming aware of the requirements for scholarship applications.Although the usual post-Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia scholarship frenzy has begun, 264 excellent students will not have to worry about funding their tertiary studies. At the shortlisting of the Star Education Fund candidates this week, most of the college and university representatives agreed that the quality of students was improving.
“The applicants are getting better in terms of grades and extra-curricular activities. It looks like more students are aware of scholarship requirements these days,” said Methodist College Kuala Lumpur Institutional Development director Khoo Teng Sooi.
“It was very tough to shortlist the candidates because many have good results. Out of the 150 applications for A Levels, most have straight A’s,” said UCSI University Trust senior manager Shannen Choi.
“Many of the applicants are very sure of the course that they want to do. Some have even applied for the course straight to UCSI as well,” she said.

No school will be neglected by the government
All schools in the State would continue to receive grants from the State Government for them to pay their cost of operations, apart from implementing various programmes for the benefit of the students.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said that grants were given out as the Barisan Nasional led Government recognises the importance of schools, including the Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) dan Sekolah Jenis Ke bangsaan Tamil (SJKT).
“We are committed in assisting these schools as they too contribute significantly to the development of the future generation which includes leaders, skilled manpower and also human capital.
“Realising this, the Malacca Government provides annual aid to such schools and this is a significant sign that we are a committed Government in ensuring the country's education agenda is never derailed due to financial reasons .” he said.

Undergraduate Focus: The bank loan option
Besides loans offered by the government and private corporations, students can seek out bank loans to further their studies. Most local banks provide them in the form of personal loans that require individuals to repay them upon graduation.
The repayment duration is about 15 to 20 years depending on the bank’s terms and conditions. Examples of banks offering personal loans for education are CIMB Bank, Maybank and RHB Bank.
Other banks offer specific loans for education rather than the general personal loans. Below are two specific education loans.
Bank Rakyat Education Financing-i Falah: Bank Rakyat offers a loan programme to finance individuals who wish to further their studies locally or overseas. This loan will cover the full cost of tuition fees, cost of living and also the purchase of study materials such as text books.

Thunderstorm safety education should be introduced in schools
Thunderstorm safety education should be made compulsory in schools as an early measure to prevent mishaps from occurring, says a lightning protection expert from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).
Director of Centre of Excellence on Lightning Protection (CELP) UPM, Assoc Prof. Dr. Mohd Zainal Abidin Ab Kadir said, society is not that concerned with safety as outdoor activities are still conducted during thunderstorms.
“When thunderstorms occur, all indoor and outdoor activities must stop until it is over to avoid damage to property and personal injury.
“The public are only aware of the danger posed by thunderstorms and take preventive measures after deaths, injuries and damage to property occur,” he told Bernama here yesterday.

Education Complaint: Markah Peperiksaan Pelajar Kolej KLIUC

The saga of the nation’s premier study awards
SOON after the SPM results were announced on March 21, many parents and students were already scrambling to find out more about the much sought after PSD (Public Service Department) scholarships.
Many of them had called the department also known by its Malay acronym JPA (Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam) and even visited its website for updates, only to be told to wait for the notice, which is expected to be released on the website on April 9 (tomorrow).
Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is also expected to come up with an official statement regarding the matter.
Student Lyn Lee who called the department’s hotline last week was told by a staff to expect an announcement soon. Other students who called were also told the same and many of them then resorted to monitoring the PSD website.
Much of the anxiety is due to conflicting information regarding the awarding of the scholarships in the print media and on social media websites.
Last June, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced that the Government would review the PSD scholarship scheme and reward students who achieved excellent results in their pre-university courses instead of the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).

Tanggung yuran IPT tapi jangan mansuh PTPTN

Rafizi: Tampung Hutang PTPTN Bidang Kuasa Pusat

CPA Deals for UM Students
THROUGH a new partnership with CPA Australia, Universiti Malaya (UM) students now have the opportunity to take up professional segments from the CPA programme during their course of study.
Two units of the CPA programme will be offered to eligible Bachelor of Accounting students in their fourth year, facilitating up to one third completion of the CPA programme whilst students complete their degree.
CPA Australia’s Malaysia general manager Priya Terumalay said that there was a need to increase the percentage of skilled workforce in business services locally.
“As the CPA programme is benchmarked at postgraduate level and our members are compelled to complete a degree prior to full membership of CPA Australia, UM was considered the most strategically aligned university partner to start this initiative because of its position as a top internationally ranked research university in Malaysia,” she added.

No Malaysian Student Admitted to Harvard in Two Consecutive Years
Starting from 1985 until 2010, hundreds of hopeful Malaysian students applied to Harvard University. Every year, at least one applicant will be successful. But for the last two years now, there has been no admission of Malaysian students into Harvard University.
Applicants from Malaysia, for the last two years, were deemed unfit in terms of quality and skill. According to Harvard, although armed with excellent results and straight A’s, what they look for in a student now is passion and the will to strive for excellence, not just on exam papers, but also in life in general.
Straight A’s sounds good on paper, but the real deal is in the quality of the student’s personality. Don’t just focus on excelling in exams; explore your talents and passion as well. In a dog eat dog world, knowing how to ace an exam alone is not enough. It all depends on how much you want to succeed in life.

NEW SIJIL TINGGI PELAJARAN MALAYSIA (STPM) FORMAT
Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) was once very much like the A-Levels, a course based around an externally assessed final examination, the STPM is now more akin to pre-university programmes such as the South Australian Matriculation (SAM).
The STPM’s new assessment system revolves around continuous school-based assessments and centralised examinations which can be re-taken to improve grades.
The changes are a great move that would helps reduce and spread out the stress levels of STPM students a little bit.
Other than that, the new format will help students with their communication and interpersonal skills which are essential in the working world.
Despite mixed reviews, only time can tell whether this new format is a blessing or a curse for the STPM students of Malaysia.
