'PTPTN is crony-owned colleges' way to make money'

PAS's Dzulkefly Ahmad upped the ante over the controversial National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN), saying it is a channel for Barisan Nasional to enrich cronies through private higher education institutes.

In his reaction to the recent debate on the subject between PKR's Rafizi Ramli and UMNO’s Khairy Jamaluddin, the Kuala Selangor MP said behind its declared objective of providing financial aid to poor students attending college, the scheme was actually the cronies' way of milking public funds.

Backing his argument, Dzulkefly, who is also PAS central committee member, cited how a private college had recently demanded PTPTN to settle some RM15 billion in debt for fees of nursing and medical students.

"This college charges RM90,000 a student in its nursing programme but could not guarantee a job upon graduation. Is this appropriate to continue?" he asked.

'Poor English a result of patriotism'

KUALA LUMPUR (May 28, 2012): The deteriorating standard of English among Malaysians is the result of an assumption that learning the language is unpatriotic, Malaysian English Language Teaching Associations (Melta) royal patron Raja Zarith Sofiah Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah said today.

“We did not see the problems we are facing today because we were filled with a sense of patriotism, and so we concentrated on the use of Bahasa Malaysia.

“This is, in itself, not wrong. We should be proud of our mother tongue and of our national language,” she said at the 21st Melta International Conference today.

“We could not see that learning a second language has nothing to do with our love for our country,” she said.

Raja Zarith, who is also Universiti Teknologi Malaysia chancellor, added that Malaysians had not foreseen a world driven by technology, and more importantly, that English would become the most spoken language in the aggressive work arena.

Earn A Diploma In Football!

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 5 (Bernama) -- Who needs a diploma in football?

Think again.

Sports today is a multi-billion Ringgit industry that can well be an income-generator for those with the right paper qualifications.

Thus, when a local college rolled out the Diploma in Football Studies, it combined both sports and business studies to tap into the sector's money-generating potential.

The programme, introduced in 2006 as probably the first of its kind in the country, is being offered by Cyberlynx International College (CIC) located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

CIC's Director of Administration, Evelyn Poon says there are many reasons why one should consider earning a qualification in football.

"Football is one of the world's most popular sports. It is played and avidly watched in most parts of the world.

"In the United Kingdom (UK) alone, it is a business worth billions of pounds, and has significant impact on the society," says Evelyn, adding that a football player can turn into a successful sports businessman as well.

Undergrads Prefer 'Tutorials' In Dining Halls?

KUALA LUMPUR, March 13 (Bernama) -- During a recent visit to a residential college at a public university here, this writer saw students studying in the dining hall of the hostel at night.

Why study in the dining hall, as it is quite noisy in there?

"This is the best place for us to study, the hall is big and can accommodate many people. We can hold discussions with our course mates without disturbing others," said Razali Kamin, a science undergraduate who hails from Lumut, Perak.

What about the library or study room then?

"The library is located too far away and will be closed at 10pm. The available study room is too small and not all of us can study in our rooms, as some stay in dormitories.

"We feel 'suffocated' studying in our room. The dining hall is opened round-the-clock and this is the best place for us to do our revisions and assignments," explained the second year student.
